5693 days of love and 1 unbearable day. Always sunshine (unless there were nails to trim or legs/paws to groom or thunder). You loved the sidewalks of NYC and the grass front yard in Austin. You smiled at everyone you met and were so generous with your quick little kisses. Smart, often smarter than everyone around you, and always my very best friend. You will be in my heart forever my darling girl. Be safe sweetheart, move easily and pain free and find Romeo, he'll be so glad to see you. I love you muches and mooches. Clementine, Tinta and I send you off with all our love.</font></div>

One has song lyrics integrated
into the image and one has quotes, words, thoughts on the pages. I
sort of accidentally started this new book by thinking that I had, and was carrying
along if I move, a bunch of little pieces of random paper that I like but have
not fitted into one of the sort of planned journals.</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: white; font-size: 13.5pt;">I started making sort of pages,
different sizes etc and then ended up with a bunch of glued together page
starts that I had no place to put. So... I sewed them together using an accordion folded spine, and ended up
with a journal. I have since painted and glued and made marks and by no
means does it feel "done" but I thought some of my viewers might like
to see where it is now.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

I have WANTED to live in New York City since I was 8 years old. I remember standing in the middle of a big sidewalk... probably Lexington Ave in the 40's and saying... "This is the best place to live forever." And it is.<br />
<br />
I have lived in 4 places in the City, each one better in some way than the one before and I am going to do some documentation of all that here off and on.<br />
<br />
The reason for the trip down memory lane is this... I passed my 70th year a while ago. I am still walking with the dogs almost every day for 2 miles at a pretty good clip.. we pass people. But I know how old I am and it seems to me that it is time to gather the wagons.... at least some of the wagons.<br />
<br />
My kids live in Austin TX. I have been there a couple of times but not in the last 10 years. They are pushing me to come there "while you can still make your own friends and do art things and be yourself."<br />
<br />
I can see the logic. I have pondered it, struggled with it and resisted it... but it does make sense. I know the kind of things I do.. collage, art bookmaking, pastels, a bit of painting etc. are done in Austin. I have the links to the <a href="http://atxbookarts.org/" target="_blank">Austin Book Arts Center</a> and I know there are other places too. I know I can do this, but it does seem like an enormous challenge for me and for the menagerie.<br />
<br />
SO I made a book to document it and to keep me moving toward it. I originally felt that I was aiming for selling the co-op here in November - ish of this year but I now am thinking that April - ish of next year is better. There is a lot to do and I am not going to let it be my sole focus for that time because there is this city I love and I am going to do some things I want to do one more time. I know I can come back.. but it isn't the same and I want to eat at certain places and visit certain places and document those too in my book.<br />
<br />
OK. I loved Rebecca Makkai's book The Great Believers. It was one of my favorites this year from my bookclubs. I made the book for the next part of my crazy life out of the cover from The Great Believers.. I should say that the book fell apart while my friend was reading it, and she gave me the cover as a joke. I am going to mostly be writing, I think, but who knows. On Instagram I have put some photos of the book I made, and sent people here for the reasoning behind the book. I am adding a few photos below of the book........ I kept the title part of the cover and worked around it. There are 7 folios each with an assortment of paper types and the cover of each folio is a piece of gelliprint paper that I liked.<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"</span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We were the great believers. I have never cared for any men as much as for these who felt the first springs when I did, and saw death ahead, and were reprieved—and who now walk the long stormy summer.” —F. Scott Fitzgerald, “My Generation”" is the epigraph for The Great Believers</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I hope this book does not only document a long stormy summer.....</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">....</span><br />

This is the second in my <a href="https://www.instagram.com/jordiwaggoner" target="_blank">Instagram experiences</a>.. This was a photo I took of a photography friend a zillion years ago.. maybe 35 or so... and used as the source for an image transfer. The rest is collage and this is a point in the book where one page is the back of the previous spread I showed here and the right side is the back of the next spread, which I think is a 3-fold page.<br />
<br />
I liked the circles. I ALWAYS like circles..<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MszYMPk3NXE/XFUeNoYfAdI/AAAAAAAAnTc/tYdFdtXfMTof-PJ9mhQ-Ecm4HnSV6yqiACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1223.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="864" data-original-width="1600" height="172" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MszYMPk3NXE/XFUeNoYfAdI/AAAAAAAAnTc/tYdFdtXfMTof-PJ9mhQ-Ecm4HnSV6yqiACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1223.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the full spread, circles and all. All my pages are pretty spontaneous, I do NOT plan ahead, though I think about how to do that. This set of pages took maybe a year overall, but I think it is done. I build imagery up, take some out by painting over it, collage on top of them, and in this instance I did a Matte medium image transfer from a photo I shot years ago and always liked. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_FGle7xGg4/XFUeN0ygrPI/AAAAAAAAnTg/KWPJXO0pJQkSGxZHn0fwiCGXJUgIW-GQQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1224.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1481" data-original-width="1600" height="296" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_FGle7xGg4/XFUeN0ygrPI/AAAAAAAAnTg/KWPJXO0pJQkSGxZHn0fwiCGXJUgIW-GQQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1224.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Right side, some of what shows through is the paint samples on the original page. I liked the look and never quite covered them up. The bottom left is a set of 3 postage stamps that I liked.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jxj0SgLEBFs/XFUeNfCqahI/AAAAAAAAnTY/ejYm09n5n_4pPl1GHoG0g9SZprsWU0N5QCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1225.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1356" data-original-width="1600" height="271" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jxj0SgLEBFs/XFUeNfCqahI/AAAAAAAAnTY/ejYm09n5n_4pPl1GHoG0g9SZprsWU0N5QCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1225.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The graphic is a piece of found printing, not sure where I got it, and I just used the circles and went off on my own. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The summary pic will be on Instagram in a few minutes. </div>

I think I have to... I made a Coptic stitch journal out of paint sample sheets.. the kind you get at the hardware store and they are tri-fold or even quatra-fold. I overpainted them with gesso and with gouache and whatever I had around, and let the rectangles of the paint samples show through and just went ahead and sewed.<br />
<br />
Every now and then on Instagram I show some page samples and I thought this might help me revive this blog. Just because people are not blogging does not mean I should stop and besides, I am a long form kind of person, so this is a page spread from the Big Blue Book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x5D7x3AvOYs/XEzAiB-tuLI/AAAAAAAAnI0/Jv2c0x6Q0R0ocAwCf6KDmnNx8H3L_TEPACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="708" data-original-width="1600" height="141" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x5D7x3AvOYs/XEzAiB-tuLI/AAAAAAAAnI0/Jv2c0x6Q0R0ocAwCf6KDmnNx8H3L_TEPACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1218.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the full spread, it was a quad to start with, and I stitched the Coptic attachment through the center, so it folds out to look like this. </div>

The drawing is one of many I saved from my days in classes with figure models, and the rest is paint, stencils and collage from a variety of places. I like the way it flows across the page and I have decided it is "done" .... for me that means it is time to leave it along and let it fly by itself. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
NOW... I am referring people from Instagram over here. The one thing IGram does that I like is it lets people comment easily. .... SO if you came here from IGram you can comment here or there, but let me know what you think. I have a lot of "finished" pages that are sitting around and I thought that I might start showing some of them like this if this works. Talk to me !!</div>

I got a dog....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0pj8sePXbAVstDv0dPKmcbQKejZPGdWKCKX5oljm87aM05ghfhX1bSLojOvI_9jErOz-3Gsh9sDE_tkyvJljMLi7MsfPiaz1-Bbv0xYtjrl_Mf-vq3e1GnClpzLJo9ZJZz_sefMIv7ZA/s1600/march52005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="592" data-original-width="600" height="196" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0pj8sePXbAVstDv0dPKmcbQKejZPGdWKCKX5oljm87aM05ghfhX1bSLojOvI_9jErOz-3Gsh9sDE_tkyvJljMLi7MsfPiaz1-Bbv0xYtjrl_Mf-vq3e1GnClpzLJo9ZJZz_sefMIv7ZA/s200/march52005.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And then I encountered a book that really changed how I thought about how I wanted to spend my "retirement". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I9gOh4mb2UI/Wp2tyH_CmTI/AAAAAAAAhbQ/MwsFKpEE2As9DmzWiN5EIEqLF57I25ARwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1129.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I9gOh4mb2UI/Wp2tyH_CmTI/AAAAAAAAhbQ/MwsFKpEE2As9DmzWiN5EIEqLF57I25ARwCLcBGAs/s200/IMG_1129.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lk Ludwig has an interesting do it yourself approach to photography, book binding and collage. I loved this book and still go back to it first when I am looking for ideas. NOW... does she give instructions for exactly what I am doing? Nope, but she gave me some ideas and I sort of went with them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I built up a collection of 4 collaged "books". I started doing them in 2014, I had some decent paper and I made 4 pamphlet stitched books. I didn't work in a straight line through the books, but I did finish one before I did the second and I did date them as I went. I am slightly notoriously slap dash, but dating things that I am working on is one of my main rules. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are the covers. The books are about 4" by 6" and contain generally 25ish pages. Not all the pages are the same size, there were some leftover bits of the same paper that I just bound in as they fit. I will do some content pictures and there are some earlier in the blog that I will link to from each book that was covered here.. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Number 4 is the last one, dated May 19, 2015. I finished it last year in <a href="http://abovethegwb.blogspot.com/2015/11/journal-4-last-two-pages.html" target="_blank">November 2016</a>, and I documented it here on the blog. If you want to see other pages, just click on previous and work your way back. as I documented a bunch of this book as it was then. The first pages are<a href="http://abovethegwb.blogspot.com/2015/11/journal-pages-book-4-pages-1-and-2.html" target="_blank"> here</a>.My nature is that I never think something is ever really done. I know I worked in all of these books for at least another 2 or 3 years. As of 2017, however, there were no more empty spaces or places, and I began to think about next steps. I also started working in my big huge collage journal, and it was taking a lot of my thought. So I began to consider how to keep these from getting lost. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will post the process with pictures over the next week or so. </div>

Mason Dixon's Ann and Kay are talking about Log Cabin knitting and pushing the boundaries.<br />
<br />
Well, Log Cabin and Ball Band were two of my favorite things in their <a href="https://smile.amazon.com/Mason-Dixon-Knitting-Knitters-Patterns-Questions" target="_blank">first book</a>... and lots of my knitting life has been spent knitting log cabin stuff.<br />
<br />
Start by understanding that I have enough sock yarn in a HUGE variety of colors and I will NEVER be able to knit all those socks. And, I started just knitting one sock in one colorway and then the next sock, often a different pattern, in a different color. That left me with a lot of half balls of colors, and there are only so many pairs of sneaker socks (whatever they are called... you know what I mean) that one can wear.<br />
<br />
SO I am now showing you pictures of my last 3 log cabin slightly larger than lap blankets. <br />
<br />
This one started out as a scarf, so the center part the is yellow at the start was fairly long before I tired of it. ... So I bound off and picked up along the long side to make a larger square and log cabined (do you suppose that can be a verb?) from then on. I just used one ball until I got tired of it, hunted around for something else I liked and continued until I decided it was time to turn it, bound off, picked up across the piece and kept on going. SO. It is a log cabin, but since no measuring took place it is a log cabin INSPIRED piece, I guess.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5U-W2hBLs0k/WbBMBfisLtI/AAAAAAAAedk/-nxVelGQBawLmkUMjU2ZxexfqOmijg_ggCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170906_150121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1490" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5U-W2hBLs0k/WbBMBfisLtI/AAAAAAAAedk/-nxVelGQBawLmkUMjU2ZxexfqOmijg_ggCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_20170906_150121.jpg" width="297" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the same piece but it looks so different when the intro piece is vertical, so I shot it from the other side so you could see it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JOdrM463-3c/WbBMCwwfzSI/AAAAAAAAedo/eV1kaPVLpk4MPOWA270X82xYgX66YoZkgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170906_150133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1374" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JOdrM463-3c/WbBMCwwfzSI/AAAAAAAAedo/eV1kaPVLpk4MPOWA270X82xYgX66YoZkgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_20170906_150133.jpg" width="274" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is actually the first one I did. It might have started as a washcloth in the Ballband Pattern. I have a couple of those out of this fine cotton. I had several cones of it and I loved working with it. .. anyway.. I launched into log cabin and kept the Ballband pattern, and changed it slightly here and there. </div>

<br />
Finally, this is the last one I kept. (I also made one for my best friend as a sort of wedding present). I tried to do some increasing around the edges with this one, why I do NOT remember. I don't recommend it. I wanted a frilly edge for some reason...do NOT be deluded into thinking that is an improvement. But you get a sense of how ANY color can be worked in. I heard Kaffe Fassett talk once and he said.. if it looks like the color you just added doesn't work, ADD MORE COLORS!... or words to that effect. He is, as usual, right. Several times in all the colored ones I would start thinking oops! and I made myself keep on.. and it resolved itself.<br />

It is the third online class that I have taken from her and I have learned a lot from each of them. What is great about her classes that I have not seen in other online classes that I have taken is that she comments on every single thing posted in the class space and the posts are thoughtful and helpful, not just "attagirls". She has a structure for the class and it moves you through a series of steps and you end up knowing more than when you started. I know I said similar things yesterday, but I decided that some people might only look at today, so Jane gets two posts... VBG!<br />
<br />
SO, these are a couple of the class products. Nothing is ever finished that is done to meet the class requirements, but a couple of the things I did this time I found interesting, so here they are. The class is totally Black and White. The BEST class was 100 drawings on cheap paper, which was SO much fun I would almost take it again.. still might. This one was shorter and more structured and really focused on the process of making black and white abstracts.<br />

Makes it harder to do a thoughtful post here, I just put up a cat or dog post and I'm good. But I'm going to be here more with my journal entries as soon as I make some!<br />
<br />
I've been working through some online classes, one with <a href="http://janedavies-collagejourneys.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jane Davies </a>that is GREAT! I'm doing her <a href="http://janedaviesstudios.com/workshops/online-workshops/" target="_blank">black and white abstract class </a>and she is teaching me so much. I have taken a couple of her classes and the best part is that she never let's you slide by. If you do the work she gives you thoughtful evaluations and suggestions and never lets you phone it in.<br />
<br />
Try it!jordi http://www.blogger.com/profile/01231592235682151842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105101486712635426.post-58204807269850144572017-06-06T08:00:00.000-04:002017-06-06T08:00:00.292-04:00How hoarding feeds what I make, though there are more hoards to be revealedI got some questions about a book I showed on<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BU69lWMDThR/?taken-by=jordiwaggoner" target="_blank"> Instagram</a> and<a href="http://abovethegwb.blogspot.com/2017/05/a-newart-journal.html" target="_blank"> here</a> a few posts ago. I made it ages ago and found it intimidating and so have only recently begun to work on the pages.<br />
<br />
I painted paint sample brochures, the kind you get from hardware stores. They are a variety of sizes and formats, but range from 8 inches by 8 inches to 9 inches by 12 inches or even bigger. They are all either three or four folds, so open they are really large. I painted them all with acrylics, with no real plan as to color or theme. I did it over about 3 or 4 days, so continuity was never a consideration. <br />
I bound them into a book with a really simple coptic stitch binding and used some cloth tape that was used to tie up a delivery to help hold them together. I just covered bookboard with some nice paper that I had saved (two hoarder savings in the cover alone!) for the cover, it has a snakeskin texture that you can feel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FKJboefZuLE/WTRC0qYhUqI/AAAAAAAAccc/Pd3bGwsyOlg5s5tNZ-zMwm3xfd1J0ElWACEw/s1600/IMG_20170604_103522_552.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FKJboefZuLE/WTRC0qYhUqI/AAAAAAAAccc/Pd3bGwsyOlg5s5tNZ-zMwm3xfd1J0ElWACEw/s320/IMG_20170604_103522_552.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Some pics might help here... to show that the trifold and quadrofold pages can be seen in several ways, depending on how they are folded. The interactions between pages is VERY interesting to consider in creating pages.<br />
<br />
The right side page here is the same in each of the next two pics. The left page is folded differently.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here the furthest left side is folded behind the center page.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L_O3fHr-vNY/WTRCyFL3JaI/AAAAAAAAccQ/5B-lcwa3-AowlqXNF3UYWZai3aItuwFXgCEw/s1600/IMG_20170604_102758.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1196" data-original-width="1600" height="239" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L_O3fHr-vNY/WTRCyFL3JaI/AAAAAAAAccQ/5B-lcwa3-AowlqXNF3UYWZai3aItuwFXgCEw/s320/IMG_20170604_102758.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here the page is folded over the center part of the page.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-322EUWVknto/WTRCyfPiUKI/AAAAAAAAccU/f4M_frWx7D4epZ5ySOnuHYypKfPV6StlwCEw/s1600/IMG_20170604_102815.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1081" data-original-width="1600" height="216" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-322EUWVknto/WTRCyfPiUKI/AAAAAAAAccU/f4M_frWx7D4epZ5ySOnuHYypKfPV6StlwCEw/s320/IMG_20170604_102815.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see from the next picture, the pages are different sizes, so the edges do not line up, but I really like being able to see other pages behind the one I am working on at the time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cnPZmw89ARQ/WTRCzfs9NyI/AAAAAAAAccY/lVS9kVMTBZgJ8FJjk-xYNVtJAfmBIaQLACEw/s1600/IMG_20170604_102906.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1030" data-original-width="1600" height="206" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cnPZmw89ARQ/WTRCzfs9NyI/AAAAAAAAccY/lVS9kVMTBZgJ8FJjk-xYNVtJAfmBIaQLACEw/s320/IMG_20170604_102906.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the only "page" I feel is sort of finished,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9wqzeu2ITHo/WTRDzo4sebI/AAAAAAAAcck/OznfUsGXszo9njhPv7S-dCfo3pxx4ehVACLcB/s1600/IMG_0989.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="663" data-original-width="1600" height="132" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9wqzeu2ITHo/WTRDzo4sebI/AAAAAAAAcck/OznfUsGXszo9njhPv7S-dCfo3pxx4ehVACLcB/s320/IMG_0989.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
and in the following closeups you can see the other interesting part about making pages from paint sample books. Although I did lightly sand the pages if they were shiny, the grid from the sample chips is still visible. In some places I covered it with collage or something else, in others I used it. I am still playing with how this works overall.<br />

Finally... man this post got long.... I have the "red page" I am working on, and it is in pause mode while I think about it some more. I often work on more than one page at a time, so I thought I would show you my next "start" ...<br />
<br />
I have had this picture since the 1980's. Not sure exactly when I shot it. It is of one of my friend who is also a photography nut. I cropped it, played with the contrast, and printed it on my laser printer. Then I did an image transfer using matte gel medium to a page in the journal. It is on the "first side" of a trifold page. so there is a totally different page on the left and the page could open further on the right. This page also has lots of semi hidden paint samples on it. We shall see what happens next..<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-djwrAJFvaPE/WTQ4JhNmH-I/AAAAAAAAcb8/ODAj1zu-lLwUkfLsr7fYO7znqs9eXK17ACLcB/s1600/IMG_1013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-djwrAJFvaPE/WTQ4JhNmH-I/AAAAAAAAcb8/ODAj1zu-lLwUkfLsr7fYO7znqs9eXK17ACLcB/s320/IMG_1013.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I used to print black and white photos in a rental darkroom down on 3rd Street in Manhattan. It was behind an art gallery, and when the gallery wasn't open you could rent the darkroom. You could go back there and lock yourself in, turn on the radio and work as long as you wanted. It was a little slice of heaven. These are the negatives and many of the prints I made back there. I want to use them again. I haven't shot film in ages, but every time I look through these notebooks I want to break out the film cameras and start again.<br />
<br />
One story about the darkroom. I came out one evening, having been in there for hours, to find the street full of police. I asked what was going on, after I explained where I had come from, since the gallery was closed and dark. They said that the Hell's Angels had a clubhouse at the other end of the street and they were having a book signing. <br />
<br />
After I processed that I asked about the heavy police presence for a book signing in a place not well known to house bigtime readers? The police said that it was unusual, but the last time they had a book signing there was a shooting, so they were there just as deterrence.<br />
<br />
I went home.. New York, the East Side in the 1980's you gotta love it.jordi http://www.blogger.com/profile/01231592235682151842noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105101486712635426.post-85043984745660616942017-05-24T12:04:00.002-04:002017-05-24T12:04:40.804-04:00step two in the I am a Hoarder series....I am a firm believer in the premise that the unexamined life is not worth living... hmmm spell check doesn't like the word unexamined. I certainly think it is a valid word, if not a way to live :-)<br />
<br />
In any case. Years ago... Many many years ago I fell into the book <a href="https://smile.amazon.com/Artists-Way-Spiritual-Higher-Creativity/dp/1585421464" target="_blank">The Artist's Way</a>. As a result of that I started doing the Daily Pages... 3 pages of handwritten braindump first thing in the morning. It was a habit that stuck and of course generates enormous numbers of pages. I burn them, or otherwise destroy them on a semi regular basis but they do pile up. I find them very helpful in purging a lot of things that I might otherwise obsess about.<br />
<br />
I haven't purged in a while, so this is the current iteration:<br />

I need to get rid of them soon, as the iron on the right side... its the best use I have found for an iron in years... is failing to hold them up and is getting crowded out of the windowsill. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see, tags go here too...Most of them are just the dates covered but every once in a while I add "big ideas" or whatever. </div>

Hoarders can be neat, but they don't have to iron.....</div>

<br />
I was watching Hoarders or whatever the TV show is called the other day (OK, I was watching it because there was no channel playing old Law and Order shows) and I heard a guy who had a yard and a house you could not get into say exactly that phrase and it made me quiver with fear.<br />
<br />
So I thought I would start documenting what I DO hoard... and you can judge for yourselves...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j4jMxXLsZQc/WSG7RLctg_I/AAAAAAAAcRI/SughiENAgmsCo_BvLofh8e06Kw0YAluvQCLcB/s1600/IMG_1007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j4jMxXLsZQc/WSG7RLctg_I/AAAAAAAAcRI/SughiENAgmsCo_BvLofh8e06Kw0YAluvQCLcB/s320/IMG_1007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So this is area number 1. I have a few little machines (not quite as many as <a href="http://www.elegantsufficiency.org/" target="_blank">Gill</a>!) that I use regularly and my absolute favorite is my <a href="https://smile.amazon.com/We-Memory-Keepers-Bookbinding-Multicolored/dp/B005571KKC" target="_blank">Cinch</a> ... probably not the most sophisticated binding machine in the world etc. but it is little, works well and does exactly what I want to do easily. I have a zillion of those red coils and I am going to be binding using them forever.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, if you forget how to punch holes in larger pieces of paper because it has been 2 weeks since you last did it, it tells you right there on the machine how to do it. What more could you ask??</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have taken a couple of online classes... You can see <a href="http://janedaviesstudios.com/" target="_blank">Jane Davies</a> name prominently displayed on the tags there. I tend to print out what I do in the class and the lessons so I can go back to them when the class is over and then I bind them all together. The others are largely the result of a class I took years ago from <a href="http://www.pintangle.com/" target="_blank">SharonB</a> which I don't think she teaches anymore but it was from <a href="http://pintangle.com/2012/07/27/the-advantages-of-keeping-a-visual-journal/" target="_blank">this perspective</a>. She is a big advocate of keeping only one "journal" and putting EVERYTHING in the same place and letting the ideas cross pollinate with your grocery lists. So there are dates and then there are things I might want to look up later written on the tags hanging off each one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think this probably is a bit neat to qualify as a true hoard, but it is MY hoard and I love seeing them every day. That was the other thing that the hoarder said... sigh.</div>

They are different sizes, some have rounded corners, all of them had glued on paint samples, and I spread paint over all of them to start with.<br />
<br />
It has been sitting around, mostly because I found it intimidating! It is big, and it has mostly 3 fold pages, which I have not dealt with a lot before. I guess I needed to ponder it for a while. I loved the choices I made in binding it, and I will show you that at a later point, but I am going to post a few pages here now to push me to keep going.<br />
<br />
This is a look at the whole spread:<br />

There is only a run of about 17 or so. This issue is 23 which is a LARGE number for me. <br />
<br />
Postcarded #6 is different also because each one of the 23 is different. Yep, I am sending out 23 different cards. It all started with the class I took from <a href="http://janedaviesstudios.com/" target="_blank">Jane Davies</a> . The class was Gelliplate Monoprints and Collage... not the real name but she doesn't seem to be offering it at this moment, so I can't tell you exactly. I LOVED it. She is a very good teacher and really goes all out on her online classes in terms of communication and support and structure and is SO worth it. <br />
<br />
HOWEVER I ended up with a TON of cannon fodder and I kept staring at that huge pile of papers thinking what to do with them. I also had a bunch of failed collages, and they were the most annoying. So, dear reader, I destroyed them by tearing them each into 6 even pieces with no regard for what they looked like or what little sections of them I found interesting. Six pieces from each collage, all the same side. There were a bunch of them, so now I had about 60 small rectangles with bits of paper stuck to them.<br />
<br />
The next step, for me, was to try turning those little sow's ears into purses, hopefully silk purses. As I went along it became more and more interesting. These little guys were cute!. Once started they became a sort of obsession, one or two every day, like vitamins. Then, what to do with finished product?<br />
<br />
I have not sent out a Postcarded in over a year and it seemed like the answer, so I started glueing them onto postcard paper and all of a sudden I had lots to choose from and all I had to do (ha!) was address and write a little note on each of them. SO they go into the mail today. Europe and Canada should be there in about a week, or so, the US.... Wednesday and on...<br />
<br />
Since they are all different, I scanned them in groups of six and will put the ones already mailed up here starting tomorrow 6 at a time. Once yours comes you can check it out and you can see what the rest turned out like. If you aren't on the postcarded list and want to see how they look in "real" let me know by email and I will add you to the mailing, I have a number of them left.jordi http://www.blogger.com/profile/01231592235682151842noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105101486712635426.post-46667916206894618552016-07-05T00:05:00.001-04:002016-07-05T00:05:54.708-04:00so I am playing with mixed media non representational imagesSounds a lot more pretentious than I intend this to be. These started out as gelliplate prints with collage on top, more gelliplate, more collage, some painting with a brush and a lot of staring at them and sighing. I am not convinced that any of them are done, but at some point you have to take a break and walk away for a while.<br />
<br />
I am only showing a couple, because I am still thinking about them all, and these may return in different combos later...<br />

I have looked at them too long......... These were started in a class with<a href="http://www.janedaviesstudios.com/" target="_blank"> Jane Davies</a>, and her classes are amazing. There is a plan to her process and she is very helpful in an online class. This was the first online class I completed and actually looked at what everyone else was doing and enjoyed the experience. The fact that I am still playing with a lot of the things I made in the class now (nearly a month after the class ended) says a huge amount about how much Jane manages to convey in the class. </div>

first these are the total number of stampettes so far.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IYxUF914znE/V3AlA6X3JSI/AAAAAAAAYuw/B9qlCBEPFisRHKFedQrN0ZsiMQxrIsDQQCLcB/s1600/IMG_20160626_100432.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IYxUF914znE/V3AlA6X3JSI/AAAAAAAAYuw/B9qlCBEPFisRHKFedQrN0ZsiMQxrIsDQQCLcB/s320/IMG_20160626_100432.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
I found that if I was relatively careful I could use the piece I cut out as a different stamp, which is nice for my sloppy "rustic" ways. I did that with the triangles I cut out of the wagon wheel and with the wine glass that I cut out of a narrow left over piece.<br />
<br />
I have backed most of the bigger stampettes with a third layer, as I did with the one I cut through too vigorously, and it does improve the stamping. So I think I will stop now for a while and see how well they last.<br />
<br />
THE JOURNAL<br />
<br />
I had a couple of off list questions about what I was stamping these samples in. (Surprises me that people read this as much, I am sure as it does you).<br />
<br />
I found this big old Record book from 2013 in the "Library" that I created for the building that I live in. I found people were tossing out decent books when they moved etc. so I scrounged some shelving and now we have a place where your books can live til someone else wants to read them. It is interesting what shows up... why anyone would think that people want a 1964 book on calculus is a mystery to me... but if they have interesting pages I dissect them and keep the pages I like. SO, earlier this year, some one left this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EuOrrqe9z80/V3AlAHYVYaI/AAAAAAAAYu4/V8hif6Ex_2UPlXKUR1XVf9SuGBzV9F_HQCKgB/s1600/IMG_20160624_150015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EuOrrqe9z80/V3AlAHYVYaI/AAAAAAAAYu4/V8hif6Ex_2UPlXKUR1XVf9SuGBzV9F_HQCKgB/s320/IMG_20160624_150015.jpg" width="254" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and I just couldn't let it sit there unused. SO I use it as a "studio journal". I took a class from <a href="http://pintangle.com/classes-online/artists-studio-journal-a-designers-workhorse/" target="_blank">Sharon B. ages ago called An Artists Studio Journal, a Designer Workhorse</a> and I loved it. It looks like she isn't teaching it much anymore, but it made me think differently about how things marinate together in my mind. So this is the current iteration of the Journal. I slam everything in here, tear outs from the Times, printouts of things... articles and pictures that I love online, notes from friends, trash from the street and samples of inks and things I use. I have several of these which I have used over the years since taking the class and they are wonderful brain stimulators. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one was obviously not designed to be stuffed, so I cut out hunks of pages as I go so it will sort of close...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

In any case, for a non- OCD person like me, it is a great idea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Dfv250VVr2w/V217fj0LitI/AAAAAAAAYrw/iXMPiy1IGWUDaw5yML0HQq1srnRN1htggCLcB/s1600/IMG_20160624_112146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Dfv250VVr2w/V217fj0LitI/AAAAAAAAYrw/iXMPiy1IGWUDaw5yML0HQq1srnRN1htggCLcB/s320/IMG_20160624_112146.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I just made these. I hate perfection in stamps or in stencils or in anything that looks "manufactured" so I tend to make my own stamps etc. Cutting them takes time, and mine are always a little rough. What I did here, which is MUCH faster than "real" stamp carving is to stick together, using the sticky backs, two Sticky Back Foam Sheets... when stuck together they looked like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1iKBiNNi8Bw/V217e3ZUFqI/AAAAAAAAYsE/G_gPvNY1U3IRBgMCwD4lTJvWmzr8B2xBACKgB/s1600/IMG_20160624_112302.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="137" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1iKBiNNi8Bw/V217e3ZUFqI/AAAAAAAAYsE/G_gPvNY1U3IRBgMCwD4lTJvWmzr8B2xBACKgB/s320/IMG_20160624_112302.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
and then I used my smallest Xacto blade and cut patterns, having drawn them first with a Sharpie.<br />
<br />
In one I got a little enthusiastic with the Xacto and cut through both layers in a couple of places, so on that one I cut another square from a third Foam Sheet and stuck that to the back to hold it together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6lUYMNhmcnc/V217e7xqrgI/AAAAAAAAYsE/49TfjFCt_6wHP89RDVgkgUkJX-KbDv5EQCKgB/s1600/IMG_20160624_112223.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6lUYMNhmcnc/V217e7xqrgI/AAAAAAAAYsE/49TfjFCt_6wHP89RDVgkgUkJX-KbDv5EQCKgB/s320/IMG_20160624_112223.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I actually like this better, as it is a bit firmer when it prints so I may well do it to the others too. Main thing is ... they print!!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ek03wvAcr5A/V217gQh6gvI/AAAAAAAAYsI/zAxqNk3yjDkGVNUIknvvWDHdboe2goPJgCKgB/s1600/IMG_20160624_112932.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ek03wvAcr5A/V217gQh6gvI/AAAAAAAAYsI/zAxqNk3yjDkGVNUIknvvWDHdboe2goPJgCKgB/s320/IMG_20160624_112932.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Will they last forever? probably not but they will be "rustic" which I love and quite inexpensive and fast to make. I am loving the ease of making a bunch quickly. 12 sheets of sticky back foam are about $8 on Amazon and I made about a dozen squares and a few long thin stamps from 2 sheets. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
FUN!!</div>

It is a walkway between two blocks in the 50's and I have always loved the soaring space with the street out there...<br />
<br />
And once there I saw this....<br />

More about Edgar Degas: A Strange New Beauty is <a href="http://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/1613?locale=en" target="_blank">here</a>. You can see the hand of the artist and his fingerprints in some of the prints, it is an amazing show.</div>

Three out of four watch me for my entire shower. They go off once I get out, but I am rarely out of their sight...jordi http://www.blogger.com/profile/01231592235682151842noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105101486712635426.post-92087668898614221542016-05-21T13:25:00.001-04:002016-05-21T13:25:21.824-04:00why can't a corporation as big as the NY Times deliver the thing they are making?This is a rant. There is no purpose for it other than to allow me to vent about something that is driving me absolutely crazy. Just read it and giggle, there is no other possible response unless you are representing the NY Times. In that case, please fix this.<br />
<br />
It is fascinating to me that the NY Times cannot reliably deliver the newspaper to my door... a service for which I pay an EXORBITANT amount of money! <br />
<br />
To aid in understanding my rant, the paper is supposed to arrive every day, 7 days a week, and I am not fussy about time as long as it is there by 8:30, which is when I generally go to look for it.<br />
<br />
On Saturday, there is a big delivery, which includes significant sections of the Sunday paper, as well as Saturday's complete paper.<br />
<br />
Today, Saturday, the delivery was late. OK, they told me via email that it was going to be late, and I can roll with that. It arrived about 9:30 and I set it down til I had fed all the fur kids and was ready to read.<br />
<br />
I opened it to discover that I got most of the portions of Sunday I generally get. I got the A section of Saturday, and that was it. NO Saturday paper beyond the first section. No Sports, no Art section, no business section, no obituaries, nothing beyond the A section of Saturday's paper. <br />
<br />
NOW, when I go to report that, it seems that I am probably not reporting it in a way that will assure that I get Saturday's paper tomorrow and I am STRONGLY encouraged to read it all online since it was going to be late anyway.<br />
<br />
Let me clarify to the NY Times... if I wanted to read it digitally, I would not pay an enormous amount of money to have the paper version delivered. I do that because I want to READ that. I want today's paper.... the obituaries, the ads, the serendipitous exposure that occurs when one article or ad is near another one. I want the PAPER!!!! If tomorrow I get two copies of Sunday and no copy of Saturday I will not be at all surprised. Actually, if I get the rest of Sunday I will be surprised. Each week presents a new opportunity for a new way for the NY Times newspaper to fail to deliver the NEWSPAPER!<br />
<br />
Obviously, since I ventured into this rant, this is not the first time that my paper has failed to appear, either completely or with sections missing. I just needed to put this out there with enough mentions of the NY Times in the body of the text so that perhaps, someone whose job it is to track reporting about the NY Times might find it. Obviously I have been hitting the Kool Aid.<br />
<br />
While I am at it, I have had several communications with the Book Editor about the Search capability, or lack thereof on the Times site. When I can search and find book reviews better by searching with Google vs. searching on the NY Times site for some of their articles there is something WRONG with the search function on the electronic version. Let's see.... can't deliver paper version, can't make an electronic version that works as it should..... worrisome, isn't it?jordi http://www.blogger.com/profile/01231592235682151842noreply@blogger.com0
